Wellington Airport

Gateway to New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington Airport is one of the nation’s busiest transportation hubs. Understanding the characteristics and constant presence of the local winds provided visual evidence of personality traits that captured the exuberance, humour, drama and celebrations of the city.

Wild at heart became the theme for an illustrative language that impacted every corner of the airport. Rather than a traditional symbol or logotype, the expressive language sat comfortably against the regulatory signage traditional to most airports. This not only ensured the brand’s presence, but continually delivered messages relevant to the location and the travellers.

Small additions to the internationally recognised toilet symbols left no doubt as to what was provided, but also a reminder these facilities were in windy Wellington. With replacement carpet months away, the existing worn areas were adorned with illustrations that indicated that rectification would be made in the near future.

The opportunity of turning operational elements into brand-building and storytelling mechanisms is always there. Wellington Airport’s south terminal extension, with large areas to be carpeted, offered a significant opportunity to enhance the visitor experience.

In collaboration with local artists, commissioned works that depicted local landscape characteristics were integrated into a foundation graphic theme that reflected the harbour city’s shoreline. A down to earth storytelling opportunity.
