Wellington City Council

Takina

Takina is the first premium conference and exhibition space in New Zealand’s capital city. The Te Reo Maori name, meaning to invoke or call upon, was created in partnership with WellingtonNZ and local iwi, Taranaki Whanui. The building’s distinctive design is based on meteorological and topographic elements of the area, Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

This gave rise to a karakia, summoning the various winds unique to the area.

The identity reflects the four ranging winds of Tawhirimatea, the Maori God of Wind. These constantly shape and define the city’s identity and act as a warm invitation to bring knowledge, truth and viewpoints to the capital’s meeting place.
